(How to) Be a more adventurous traveller

“Travelling alone really helps make you more adventurous. If you’re still uncertain about doing that, start by getting out of your comfort zone — whether it’s talking to a stranger in a café, doing volunteer work or trying something on the spur of the moment. I remember for my first trip out of the United States to Europe, I simply boarded a plane to London and landed with no hostel booked, no idea where I was going next. It was a little disconcerting but it was also very liberating.

“Being more adventurous is also about planning less and doing more. Lots of people tend to plan their travels right down to the last detail. But that doesn’t give you very much flexibility as adventure comes in all forms. I had local children come up to me just to see what I’m doing when I was standing and sketching; I hitch-hiked in Malaysia and Indonesia and chatted with the drivers;I played the guitar with an Indonesian villager who didn’t speak a word of English but we could connect through music. I can’t imagine that happening if I had planned my travels.

“A sense of adventure also starts young. Although I did not set out to write children’s books with the Bumbling Bob series, I’m glad to see it’s been well received in the industry. It’s important to encourage young adults to get out to see the world before it changes further beyond recognition. Many indigenous cultures are disappearing and there is a
homogenisation of cities and cultures.

“I suppose my adventurous spirit started from childhood as well. I used to read detective stories like The Hardy Boys and Agatha Christie novels that combined travel with mysteries. My parents were subscribers to the National Geographic Magazine. We had all these issues in the house and I started picking them up and being really fascinated by the maps, photos of different countries and the narratives in the magazines. Reading definitely helps inculcate the desire to learn more about new places and people, and the desire for more adventurous travelling.”
